Gas vs. Electric Tankless Water Heaters: Which is Best for Your Home?

Knowledge Base
When upgrading to a tankless water heater, the first major decision you have to make is your fuel source: Gas or Electric. While both provide endless hot water and save space, their performance and installation costs differ wildly. Here is what you need to know to make the right choice for your home.
Gas Tankless Water Heaters: The Powerhouse
Gas tankless units (powered by natural gas or propane) are the undisputed champions of the industry. They produce a massive amount of heat instantly, meaning they have a much higher Flow Rate (Gallons Per Minute). A single gas unit can easily supply enough hot water for a large family running two showers and a dishwasher simultaneously.
The Catch: They are more expensive to install. They require proper PVC exhaust venting to the outside and often require upgrading your home's gas line to a larger 3/4-inch pipe to handle the high BTU demand.
Electric Tankless Water Heaters: The Compact Solution
Electric tankless units are incredibly small, perfectly silent, and require zero exhaust venting. They are cheaper to purchase and generally easier to install if your home already has the electrical capacity.
The Catch: Electric units simply cannot heat water as fast as gas. In the winter, when the incoming city water is cold, an electric unit will struggle to provide enough hot water for multiple showers at once. Furthermore, whole-home electric units require massive amounts of power—often needing three or four dedicated 40-amp breakers. Upgrading your electrical panel to handle this can easily cost more than running a new gas line.
The Verdict
For whole-home water heating in Spartanburg & Greenville, we almost always recommend Gas Tankless Water Heaters (like Navien or Rinnai) due to their superior performance and lower monthly operating costs. We typically only recommend Electric units for single "Point of Use" applications, like a detached garage sink or a remote guest bathroom.
